Celebrating 90 Years

This year sees Westfield Health celebrating its 90th anniversary and we are proud to say that we still strongly uphold the traditional values that inspired Westfield’s birth in 1919. This caring culture drives the organisation, putting both our staff and our customers at the centre of everything we do.

Westfield started out as the Sheffield Consultative and Advisory Hospitals Council. The ‘penny in the pound’ scheme – the forerunner of today’s health cash plan – was formed to help workers access free hospital treatment in return for a weekly contribution of a penny in every pound earned.

Ninety years on, Westfield now provides healthcare plans for approximately 370,000 policyholders throughout the UK, and more than 9,000 organisations nationally operate a Westfield plan for their employees.

To mark the anniversary, Westfield’s rise to eminence from its formation 90 years ago has been charted in a new book. ‘The History of Westfield Health through the War Years 1939 – 1945’ traces the organisation’s entire history, investigating Westfield’s origins, how it operated during the Second World War and how it has grown and expanded over the years.

The book recounts the launch of the ‘penny in the pound’ scheme in 1921, looks at how the city of Sheffield was affected by the war and how Westfield, despite many other national contributory schemes, continued to operate after the birth of the National Health Service in 1948.
