According to the Health of the Nation Report 2006*:

  • Less than half the UK population exercise enough to meet the Government’s recommended 150 minutes per week
  • The Government’s target is for 70% of the population to be exercising for 150 minutes per week
  • Those who exercised less than this took an average of 3.5 days off work sick, compared to those who exercised more than 150 minutes per week who took 3 days per year
  • People who exercised regularly visited the doctor and hospital less
  • If the Government’s target of 70% was met, sickness absence could be cut by 2.7 million days a year. This would boost the economy by £487 million
