Neglecting eyesight could lead to blindness

People who don’t have regular eye tests could be putting their vision at risk, experts have warned.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has revealed that 100 people start to lose their sight every day in the UK.

But many of these people could be helped if they visited their optician on a regular basis.

Some eye conditions can cause damage before people are even aware that there is a problem, and this may lead to poor eyesight or even blindness.

Regular eye examinations are crucial, particularly for the over 60s, so that potential problems can be detected as early as possible.

Recent research by Westfield Health discovered that 48 per cent of respondents in a survey do not have regular eye tests and six per cent had never had their eyes tested.

Gil Vasey, Director of Specsavers at Crystal Peaks, Sheffield, said: Without regular testing, eyes can deteriorate without any real telltale signs. A bi-annual eye examination is recommended for most people. It can pick up early signs of potentially blinding eye conditions such as glaucoma.”

Westfield’s healthcare plans include an optical benefit, which provides money back towards the cost of eye tests, contact lenses and glasses, so optical bills should not prevent people from staying focused on their eye care.
