Football League scores winning combination with Westfield

The Football League has scored a winning combination by introducing a Westfield Health cash plan to tackle employee healthcare and complement its existing private medical insurance (PMI).

The organisation, responsible for some of England’s biggest football competitions such as the League Cup, the Championship and Leagues One and Two, is the oldest football league in the world, overseeing 72 football clubs across the country.

Stephanie Wroe, HR and Pensions Manager for The Football League, said: “We decided to introduce a Westfield Health cash plan for our employees after we increased the excess on our PMI scheme.

“Increasing the excess helped us to control the ever increasing costs of providing private healthcare – but we were adamant that our employees shouldn’t have to foot the bill. A health cash plan that allowed them to claim back the excess seemed like the ideal solution, so we introduced Westfield’s Foresight Plan.”

The Football League, based in Preston, Lancashire, provides level one cover for more than 50 of its employees, giving staff the option to upgrade their cover by paying their own premiums.

The organisation also pays for additional For Kids cover, which provides dental, optical, therapy treatment and consultation benefits for dependent children. Football League employees can also pay for their partners to join the plan.

Stephanie said: “The two plans work really well together. Our employees know that if they need to visit the optician, dentist or physiotherapist for one or two sessions, they can claim the cost back – up to set limits – using their Westfield plan.

“Hopefully it has also given our workforce peace of mind and the assurance that we, as an employer, care about their health.

“The fact that people can gain quick access to treatment and care at a time and place that suits them, without having to worry about the costs, also helps with our absence management.”

The plan was recommended to The Football League by Kimberley Beesley, a healthcare intermediary at PMI Health Group.

Kimberley said: “The Football League wanted to increase the excess on its PMI plan to help cut costs within the company.

“However, as a conscientious employer, the organisation was very concerned that its workforce would suffer as a result. They were keen to find a solution that would help employees to manage the increase in costs, without sacrificing their healthcare needs – a Westfield Health cash plan seemed the ideal solution.”
