An inquiry into NHS dental access has been ordered by the Department of Health after it was revealed that many areas in England are still experiencing problems. *
The review follows reports that less than half of England’s adult population visited a dentist in the first two years after changes designed to improve the service were brought in. **
The reforms were introduced in a bid to make it easier for patients to find an NHS dentist and to simplify charges by establishing fixed rates for dental procedures. ***
However, in the two years up to June 2008, 1.2 million fewer patients visited a dentist, compared to the period prior to the contract.
Health Secretary Alan Johnson announced the inquiry, saying that while funding for the sector had increased since 2006, “there remain areas of the country in which people are unable to find an NHS dentist”.
He added: “I have appointed the independent review team to help us understand what more needs to be done to ensure that every person who wants to visit an NHS dentist can do so.”
Regular visits to the dentist are essential in maintaining both oral and general health.
But in light of the recent economic downturn, more people than ever are neglecting their dental health in favour of saving money.
Dental surgeon Dr John Clarke, from Woodseats Dental Care in Sheffield, said: “It is an old adage that prevention is cheaper than the cure, but when it comes to your health, and in particular oral health, it is very true.
“The National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommends that individuals take advice from their dentist with regards to how often they need a check-up. However, for the vast majority, a check-up every six months will be satisfactory.
“A dental examination includes a general health check of the mouth as well as looking at the teeth and gums. Infections in the mouth can indicate and lead to problems in the body, which makes it all the more important to have regular checks.”
Westfield Health’s cash plans cover dental costs up to set limits, therefore helping to provide more choice for people seeking immediate treatment and easing concerns about paying their dentist bills.
