Transplant Games are a great success

Four days of intense sporting action came to an end on Sunday with the close of the 31st Westfield Health British Transplant Games.

More than 1,400 people, including athletes, sponsors and Games officials, filled Ponds Forge last night for the Gala Dinner, which officially closed the Games and celebrated the achievements of all the athletes who took part.

Over the weekend, more than 800 athletes from across the country competed in 18 events in a bid for medal glory.

On Saturday evening more than 500 people including transplant athletes, supporters and the general public took part in the Star Donor Run at Don Valley Stadium to highlight the importance of organ donation.

Members of the Westfield donor run team were among the participants who braved the rain to run either 3km or 5km.

Hundreds of medals were awarded to athletes over the course of the Games with the Sheffield Transplant Team having a very successful weekend.

The Games provided a showcase for the city of Sheffield and the world-class facilities the city boasts, including Ponds Forge, English Institute of Sport (EIS) - Sheffield and Don Valley Stadium, which hosted several events.

The 31st Westfield Health British Transplant Games were a fantastic success. Here’s to the 32nd British Transplant Games in Coventry in 2009!
