Private firm launches out-of-hours GP service
The debate about GP access has moved up a gear with the news that a private out-of-hours GP telephone service has been launched.
The service, based in Poole, Dorset, offers subscribing patients access to a GP between 7pm and 7am, 365 days a year, for £340 a year.
Poole NightDoctor also offers customers a call out home visiting service if the GP feels that the condition needs to be seen on a face-to-face basis.
It is thought that the subscription-based service is the first of its kind to be offered by a private firm and their plans also cover couples and immediate family members as well as individuals.
This is the latest development in the growing debate about the need for greater GP access with increased out-of-hours care for patients.
Westfield Health was the first cash plan provider to have anticipated this growing need by introducing a 24-hour GP telephone consultation benefit, which gives policyholders, and their resident family members telephone access to a qualified GP at a time of their choice, around the clock, from anywhere in the world.
The benefit is available on many of Westfield Health’s plans including Advantage, Good4you, Flex and Chamber. It is also available to Foresight Plan policyholders who are covered by the Fitness and Wellbeing benefit in addition to the core plan.
