A revolutionary device for heart bypass surgery has been purchased by Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, thanks to a £22,500 donation from Westfield Health.
The Endoscopic Vein Harvesting System allows surgeons to remove a healthy vein from the patient’s leg using minimally invasive surgery in order to place it inside the heart, bypassing the problem area and potentially saving a life.
Norman Briffa, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Northern General Hospital, said: "The Vein Harvesting System revolutionises the surgical procedures involved in performing a heart bypass. Without it, patients are put at a much higher risk of complications as we have to make an incision right the way from the ankle to the groin in order to remove the vein.
"However, with this system we just make a small cut below the knee and use a telescope to remove it with minimal risk of infection, discomfort and other complications.
"Studies also show that it can cut costs as patients require less aftercare, due to the decrease in complications.
"I am delighted and very grateful for Westfield’s generous donation. Westfield has an excellent history of donating medical equipment and this is a fantastic device that has the ability to cut both patient complications and costs."
Graham Moore, Chairman of Westfield Health, said: "The Vein Harvesting System is a ground-breaking piece of equipment that can make heart bypass surgery go smoother for both the patient and the surgeon. We are delighted to play a part in something that will have a great effect on the lives of so many people."
