Physiotherapy can reduce staff absence
Employees who miss work due to back pain can reduce their absence levels by up to five weeks if they receive prompt physiotherapy treatment.
That is the claim of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, which states that early treatment of back problems can also greatly reduce the chance that pain will recur during the following year*.
This follows the announcement that the Department of Health is considering plans to improve patient access to services, including physiotherapy**, in the hope that this will reduce work place absence due to musculoskeletal problems such as back pain and repetitive strain injuries (RSI).
The Department is considering a policy of allowing patients with musculoskeletal problems the chance to self-refer to a physiotherapist.
Back pain is the second biggest cause of sick leave in the UK, accounting for five million lost working days a year*** and any plans to reduce this figure would be welcomed by businesses.
