A state-of-the-art facility designed to help blind and partially sighted people in Sheffield has received a £25,000 boost from Westfield.
The Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind (SRSB) is hoping to raise £400,000 to equip and operate the new facility, which is currently being built on Mappin Street, Sheffield.
The SRSB provides support and care for almost 3,000 blind and partially sighted people of all ages, across Sheffield.
Sue Coggin, SRSB Fundraising and Marketing Manager, said: “We are extremely grateful to Westfield for their generous donation. It has given our fundraising efforts a huge boost, taking us one step closer to our goal of £400,000.
“More than 100 people start to lose their sight every day, so the charity needs to expand its services in order to cope with these increased numbers. Our new centre will provide a fresh and exciting facility offering a wide range of services to help and care for blind and partially sighted people in Sheffield.”
The Mappin Street centre will house an IT Training Room, a health and beauty room, a library and a domestic training area, which aims to encourage clients to eat well and cook for themselves.
Sue added: “The centre is set to be such an asset to the city of Sheffield. We have had an excellent start to the appeal, with many organisations – including Westfield Health – showing us exceptional kindness in their donations.
“We are now trying to target individuals and businesses, by holding fundraising events such as a golf day, a charity dinner at Whirlowbrook Hall and a concert by the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus.
“We’d like to say a huge thank you to Westfield Health for their generous contribution - it really will make a big difference to our appeal.”
Westfield Chairman, Graham Moore, said: “The Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind is a lifeline for many people who are blind or partially sighted across the city. The new facility on Mappin Street will provide them with an excellent base where they can socialise and learn new skills under one roof.
“We’re delighted to have been able to help them with their appeal and wish them the best of luck for the future.”
