The Department of Health has released new statistics which show the progress made by the NHS in tackling waiting times for diagnostic tests such as scans. *
The monthly data for February 2009 gives the waiting times for 15 key tests, which will help the NHS to deliver the 18-week maximum wait from GP to treatment.
According to the data, 3,500 patients had been waiting more than six weeks for one of the 15 key diagnostics tests at the end of February 2009. This is a decrease of 2,200 (39 per cent) from January 2009, and of 64,000 (94.9 per cent) from February 2008.
The number of patients waiting more than 13 weeks for one of the 15 key tests at the end of February 2009 was 750, a decrease of 250 (23.5 per cent) from January 2009, and of 7,700 (90.9 per cent) from February 2008.
Waits for audiology assessments make up the highest proportion of long waits. But between January 2009 and February 2009, waits of more than six weeks decreased by 600 (43.8 per cent) to 800.
Some of Westfield Health’s corporate health cash plans provide fast access to MRI, CT and PET scans, which can diagnose serious illnesses such as heart disease, brain disorders and cancer early at a treatable stage, helping to ease the pressure on the NHS.
Westfield was the first health cash plan provider to offer a stand alone MRI and CT scanning benefit – and more than 100,000 policyholders now have scanning cover.
Westfield’s plans also include a consultation benefit, which enables employees to access a private diagnostic consultation quickly, without having to worry about costs.
