Westfield gives homeless charity a boost

Westfield Health has donated thousands of pounds to a major Sheffield project which aims to help the homeless maintain a healthy, more stable lifestyle.

The health insurance provider has donated £5,000 to The Cathedral Archer Project (CAP), a day centre that supports the homeless and vulnerable in the city, based at custom built premises at Sheffield Cathedral.

CAP gives access to facilities such as hot meals, showers and a laundry, as well as signposting users to other services, like housing or accommodation which might be able to help them.

Tracy Viner, fundraising manager for the Cathedral Archer project, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled with this donation, it’s a major contribution for us and will really make a difference.

“We will use the money to fund some of our basic crisis intervention needs which are linked to the health and wellbeing of our users. We want to continue to be able to offer showers, toiletries and basic food parcels for the rough sleepers and to keep them as healthy as possible.

“In the future we’d really like to be open longer hours and be able to benefit more people, but at the moment our funds are restricted to what we can do as we are.”

CAP works with the homeless and vulnerable in Sheffield to help them find pathways away from homelessness and exclusion. Homelessness can include sleeping rough, occasional hostel spaces, camping on friends’ floors and sofas, and squatting.

The majority of its client base is made up of street drinkers, alcoholics and drug users of varying levels.  Many are not registered with a local GP and rely on the prescribing nurse at CAP for their medical support

Graham Moore, chairman of Westfield Health, said: “The CAP is an outstanding example of work for the under privileged. Unfortunately there are many people in the city centre who are homeless and in today’s world it is very important we take care of them.

“This project is an excellent example of best practice, and Westfield, being a not-for-profit organisation, feel it is very important to support these causes. Having visited the project, it makes me realise how excellent these facilities are and I hope the donation acts as a catalyst for others to support this worthy cause.”
