A landmark donation made by Westfield more than ten years ago is continuing to save the lives of hundreds of children across the South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and North Nottinghamshire regions.
The Tandem Mass Spectrometer (TMS) was purchased by The Children’s Hospital, Sheffield, Newborn Screening Laboratory in 1999, after Westfield donated £50,000 towards the equipment to mark the organisation’s 80th birthday.
The TMS is capable of detecting MCAD Deficiency, a serious genetic disorder that affects a child’s ability to use fat as an energy source and therefore cope with illness.
In some circumstances their blood sugar levels can drop dramatically and if the condition goes undetected and the child isn’t treated properly, they can slip into a coma and even die.
Westfield Chairman Graham Moore said: “As a non-profit making organisation, there’s no better objective than seeing young healthy kids who are here today because our injection of money has resulted in The Children’s Hospital buying a piece of equipment that really is not only saving a few lives - but lots of lives.”
Sarah Bowns, whose daughters Bryony and Bethany both have MCAD Deficiency that was detected by the TMS, said: “I am very grateful, without this we probably wouldn’t have our children and I just cannot thank them enough”
The donation was made by Westfield’s Charitable Trust, which every year makes substantial donations to the NHS and medically related charities, to help improve the lives of many people throughout the UK.
