A diet and fitness programme for children is to be introduced across the country today, in a bid to tackle the UK’s growing obesity crisis. *
Kids 2 classes will be launched in Rosemary Conley’s slimming clubs nationwide, and will invite children over the age of 10 and their parents to participate in a variety of activities including fitness circuits, nutritional games and quizzes. They can also learn about healthy meal planning and preparation.
Currently, 25 per cent of children in the UK are overweight or obese and this figure is expected to rise to 60 per cent by 2050.
Diet and fitness expert Rosemary Conley said: “Kids 2 provides children with the opportunity to participate in a programme which is non-threatening and non-competitive where the emphasis is on fun, fitness and healthy eating.
“It is not a slimming club for kids. It will really help them to feel successful and positive about their physical pursuits.
“It is important to establish ways to combat the growing trend of obesity in the UK, especially amongst the younger generation. Whilst we already offer exercise sessions in our hugely popular classes, making this programme available to children is a natural progression for us.”
This announcement follows the introduction of free gym membership for children under five in Liverpool. **
The drive is intended to discourage the next generation from developing a ‘couch potato’ lifestyle. Activities on offer for toddlers at a network of ‘kiddie gyms’ include dance sessions, ball games and ‘active play’.
Liz Lamb, project manager of Liverpool Council’s scheme, said: “Obesity is a proven killer, and encouraging families, from the off, to play and get fit together can have huge consequences for the future wellbeing of our children.”
Maintaining children’s wellbeing has always been a priority for Westfield Health.
Westfield’s Chamber Primary Health Plan and Foresight Healthcare Plan offer optional For Kids cover, which enables employees to claim back some of the costs of their child’s healthcare expenses, including dental, optical, physiotherapy, chiropractic treatment, and diagnostic consultations, helping to ensure employees’ children remain in good health.
The Good4you Plan also provides cover for dependent children on some benefits and services, at no extra cost.
Most of Westfield’s plans also offer a GP telephone consultation service, which enables policyholders and their resident family members to speak to a fully qualified UK GP at any time, day or night, and from anywhere in the world. The GP can advise on a range of health issues including exercise and nutrition.
