Glasgow Prestwick Airport has used a Westfield Health cash plan to help manage absence and improve the health and wellbeing of its employees.
The airport has credited the Chamber Primary Health Plan with helping it to cut sickness absence from high levels to below industry standard.
The airport initially piloted the plan with members of the airport security workforce, before it was extended to the fire department the following year and then to all employees.
Thanks to its success as an effective absence and risk management tool and popular employee benefit, the plan has now been introduced to employees at Glasgow’s sister airport, Kent International.
Sonia Rafferty, Infratil Airports Europe Ltd Manager, HR and Administration, said: “We initially used the Chamber Plan to help us reduce absence levels and to provide a better understanding of health and wellbeing to our employees.
“The focus has now switched from using the plan as a solution to a preventative measure. It helps that our employees can seek quick access to treatment before problems become major conditions, which could lead to lengthy absences.
“If anyone reports any issues, we advise them that they have access to the Westfield plan and just need to get a doctor’s referral in order to see a physiotherapist or chiropractor.
“We also have an onsite physiotherapist who our employees can visit. This again is offered as a preventative measure to help our employees to maintain fitness.
“The simplicity of the plan is fantastic. It is a great low cost tool for us and the message to our employees is that we care about their health.
“Each day that someone is absent through sickness is a considerable cost to the company which is unforeseen expenditure, so at £1.10 per employee, per week, the Chamber Plan has effectively paid for itself.
“The plan forms part of our general policy of employee health and wellbeing which includes our involvement in Scotland’s Healthy Working Lives (HWL) initiative, rewarding employers committed to improving the health and performance of their workforce.
“The assistance we have received from the Chamber Plan has very much played a part in our HWL success – we have achieved the Bronze standard and are now working towards Silver status.”
Glasgow Prestwick flies approximately two million passengers a year.
