Three out of four people have suffered from depression or anxiety according to a new survey – but many refuse to visit their GP, fearing they will be offered few treatment options. *
The research, carried out by the charity Depression Alliance, found that more than one in 10 respondents would not approach their family doctor about their illness while, of those being treated for depression, 40 per cent said their doctor had not involved them in choosing their therapy.
The charity also warned that the number of people suffering from depression will increase this year as the recession takes hold.
Emer O’Neill, Chief Executive of Depression Alliance, said: "For people with depression and anxiety, choice [of treatment] can have an enormous impact on their recovery.
"We believe choice can empower people suffering from the debilitating condition of depression and anxiety ... leading ultimately to self-care."
The survey results come just weeks after the Department of Health launched the New Horizons initiative, designed to help people suffering from mental health problems. **
Phil Hope, Care Services Minister, said: “Mental illness affects us all. Whether it is ourselves, a family member or a friend, lots of us will experience a mental health problem at some point in our lives.
"Over the past 10 years we've made great strides in transforming the way mental health is dealt with. But we need to do more.
"Individuals, employers and all sorts of organisations have a role to play in helping to achieve good mental health for all."
