Swimming championship success

More than 200 of the nation’s leading swimmers with a learning disability have visited Sheffield to compete in the prestigious British Championships.

The British Swimming Championships are organised by learning disability charity Mencap in partnership with Special Olympics Great Britain and the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation. They have been held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre for the last five years.

The event was once again supported by Westfield Health. Nick Hutton, Westfield’s Vice Chairman, said: “We are delighted to once again be supporting such a prestigious event that helps athletes with a learning disability to realise their dreams. We thoroughly enjoyed attending the event and would like to congratulate all the competitors who participated.”

Mencap supports 1.5 million people with a learning disability in the UK, and their families and carers. The charity aims to improve many aspects including leisure facilities and supporting thousands of people with a learning disability to live their lives the way they want.

Mencap’s National Sport Manager Nick Parr said, “We’re thrilled that Westfield Health has once again supported the Annual British Swimming Championships, and we hope that this event will be the next step for swimmers with a learning disability who hope to take part in the 2012 Paralympics.”
