Margaret Cairney is a health and fitness officer at Lagoon Leisure Centre, based at Paisley, which is part of Renfrewshire Leisure.
When she found a lump in her breast, she was able to use the Westfield Chamber Primary Health Plan’s consultation benefit immediately, much to her relief and to that of her family.
Margaret said: "After seeing the doctor, I was told I would have to wait two weeks for tests to see if the lump was malignant.
"As it was during the Christmas and New Year period I did not want to put myself and my family through a worrying time. As a Westfield policyholder I knew I could claim money back for the cost of a private consultation, so I contacted them straight away.
"Having spoken to Westfield, I contacted Ross Hall Hospital in Glasgow and was given an appointment for the next day. They carried out tests and I was given my results at the end of the day with one test pending.
"Fortunately the results were good. The consultant also sent me to a Glasgow NHS hospital for a further test one month later and that was also successful.
"The results were the best present ever, as my sister had died of cancer ten months before. If Renfrewshire Leisure did not provide the Westfield plan, the private consultation would not have been possible."
Renfrewshire Leisure’s whole workforce is covered by Westfield’s Chamber Plan as a company-paid benefit.
The sport and leisure company introduced level 1 cover four years ago, giving staff the option to upgrade their cover. Joyce McKellar, Chief Executive at Renfrewshire Leisure, said: "We introduced the Chamber Plan to enhance the staff benefit scheme for each of our 182 employees.
"Since implementing the plan, it has been regarded as an excellent benefit by workers, including Margaret, and staff absence has reduced."
Jason Duncan, the company’s facility duty manager, has used the plan to get back to work earlier than expected following a back problem. He said: "I was having long-term trouble with pain in my back, which forced me to be off work for a considerable time.
"After advice from occupational health, a consultant recommended that I went for an MRI scan, but through the NHS I was advised there would be a lengthy wait.
"So, I contacted Westfield who booked me an appointment with their selected hospital. They carried out a scan for me the following week and, after being advised that the problem could only be fixed by surgical procedure, I was booked in to have the work done on the NHS just a week later.
"There’s no doubt in my mind that Westfield’s Chamber Plan saved me weeks of pain and facilitated my earlier return to work."
