Donation supports blossoming garden project
A gardening charity that provides specialist horticultural activities for adults with mental health issues has received more than £3,000 from not for profit health insurer Westfield Health.
SAGE Greenfingers Horticultural Therapy Project, which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary, received the donation to help cover maintenance costs at its site on Grimesthorpe allotments in Burngreave, Sheffield.
The charity runs therapeutic gardening sessions for people with mental health problems, chronic health issues and disabilities.
But its allotments are situated on a steeply sloping hill overlooking the Don Valley, and the wet weather of the previous winters had led to parts of the site needing urgent maintenance work.
This donation has enabled the project to carry out repairs at the allotments, including the replacement of a pergola, and to make the site more accessible for adults with disabilities by re-fitting three raised flower beds to make gardening work possible for people with back problems.
Diana Tottle, Director at SAGE Greenfingers, said: “Our allotment site was in a sorry state after the rains of this year and snow of last. Westfield Health’s support has helped get us up to speed again by refurbishing walkways and raised beds that were rotting away and slipping down the slope.
“Our oasis in the heart of Burngreave is now well on the way to looking fantastic again - ready for various activities we are planning with our members for this, our 10th anniversary year!"
Graham Moore, Chairman of Westfield Health, said: “We’ve supported SAGE Greenfingers for the last five years and we’ve seen at first hand the impact of their work on the lives of some of society’s most vulnerable adults. We’re really looking forward to seeing the finished result when the charity showcases its achievements of the last decade, as well as its beautiful gardens, later this year.”
