A Sheffield charity that specialises in providing support to people with learning disabilities has received £3,500 from the Westfield Health Charitable Trust to help refurbish their training kitchen facility.

Sheffield Mencap will now be able to refurbish its training kitchen to make it more accessible and provide more cookery classes for their members who are in wheelchairs, thanks to the donation from Sheffield-based health and wellbeing company Westfield Health.

The charity, based at Norfolk Lodge, works with their members to help them gain more independence, confidence, meet new people, find a job and take part in activities.

Sheffield Mencap is an independent local organisation working in partnership with national charity Royal Mencap. It relies solely on its own funding, and provides services to anyone in Sheffield with a learning disability and to their families.

Lucy Mckane, Fundraiser at Sheffield Mencap, said: “Here at Norfolk Lodge we teach people with learning disabilities life skills to help them progress towards a more independent life.

“Cookery skills classes are a crucial part of everyday life at the Activity and Learning Hub so the training kitchen is vital. We are so grateful to the donation from Westfield Health which has enabled us to refurbish and replace outdated equipment to make the kitchen more accessible for our members who are in wheelchairs.”

Graham Moore, Chairman at Westfield Health, said: “We are delighted to be able to donate Sheffield Mencap with £3,500 and we are sure it will help many of its members to access the cooking facilities.

“The charity relies on their own funding and we are happy to support them in their fantastic work they do for the people of Sheffield.”
