A local charity has received £10,000 from a leading health and wellbeing company to assist in providing specialist care and support to help rebuild the lives of patients living with cancer and their loved ones.

Weston Park Cancer Charity, which is based in Sheffield, supports patients who are currently under the care of the Weston Park Hospital. The hospital is the only specialist cancer hospital in the region and has an internationally recognised reputation as a centre of excellence in the fight against cancer.

The donation, from the Westfield Health Charitable Trust, will help fund the Cancer Support Centre, offering free and comprehensive support to individuals and their families who are affected by cancer across South Yorkshire.

The support is an invaluable lifeline for thousands of service users around the region, helping them and their loved ones to live their lives as full as possible following their cancer diagnosis.

The Centre recognises the impact a diagnosis of cancer can have, not just on a patient’s health but also on their state of mind, emotional wellbeing, financial stability, confidence and social inclusion. Last year they dealt with well over 11,000 requests for support from individuals affected by cancer.

Samantha Dixon, Chief Executive Officer at Weston Park Cancer Charity, said “In our region, approximately 27 people are diagnosed with cancer every single day. For most of these people, treating cancer medically is only part of the story and many tell us that the hardest thing about cancer is not the disease itself but the enormous strain it places on emotions, relationships and finances.

“Thanks to Westfield Health’s continued genorosity we will be able to provide support to people when it’s needed the most – giving people in our region access to the very best cancer care services.”

Graham Moore, Trustee of the Westfield Health Charitable Trust, said “We’re very proud to be making this donation to the Weston Park Cancer Charity to help improve and support the lives of patients under the care of Weston Park Hospital.

“The dedication of the staff and volunteers at this charity is remarkable and we hope our donation will help them successfully run projects to support the needs of many patients and their loved ones.”

In addition to providing drop-in information the Centre also offers structured information programmes tailored to the needs of specific groups, the ‘Positive about Life’ course for patients, the ‘Carers Course’ for relatives and the ‘Bereavement Course’ for those who have sadly lost a loved one to cancer.

These courses give individuals the opportunity to meet people in a similar situation to themselves, benefit from peer support and get practical information and advice from qualified health professionals so, despite the difficult circumstances they are facing, they can strive to live a more fulfilling and positive life.

Since 1994, the Weston Park Cancer Charity have raised over £22 million, which has vastly helped improve the lives of patient’s fighting cancer. Without the generous donations, donors and the committed volunteers, the charity would not be able to provide the care and support to the individuals that visit the Weston Park Hospital each year.
