Westfield Health helps revolutionise children's eye care.

Manchester Royal Eye Hospital cheque

A Manchester Royal Eye Hospital Charity appeal to purchase revolutionary equipment has received a £10,000 boost from Westfield Health.

As part of the hospital’s eye bi-centenary charity appeal, our donation will go towards funding a DNA Sequencer – the latest imaging technology – which will significantly aid the diagnosis of genetic eye diseases in children.

The £80,000 piece of equipment will help the hospital to diagnose inherited eye conditions using a simple blood sample and will identify the cause of the disease in as many as 75% of cases.

It will also dramatically reduce the amount of time it takes to diagnose a condition, from years to weeks, which is crucial to prevent blindness in some cases.

She said: “We are extremely grateful to Westfield Health for their donation. Their support will make a huge difference to the lives of children affected by visual disorders.

“Approximately five in every 10,000 children across the North West are registered as visually disabled or blind and more than half of all the children who have a visual disability have an underlying genetic cause.

“The DNA Sequencer will help make the diagnosis of genetic eye diseases quicker, transforming the lives of many who may otherwise go blind.”

The new technology will also give researchers better understanding of inherited eye disease, allowing them to collect data through blood samples for research purposes which could lead to further improvements in future diagnosis and treatment.
